The Hogwarts Sorting Hat is a magical item that is placed on the head of every new student at Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardy. The Hat then delves into the mind of the student, and decides which House they will be in: Gryffindor, Hufflepuff, Ravenclaw, or Slytherin.
These Houses are so named after the four founders of the school: Godric Gryffindor, Helga Hufllepuff, Rowena Ravenclaw, and Salazar Slytherin. They were the best wizards and witches of their time (around a thousand years ago). Each House has a certain stereotype associated with it. These stereotypes are due to the founders and what their favorite traits were. These are further explained in the songs themselves, of which there are three.
