Did you know that you can own a fox for a pet? As crazy as it sounds, there are now foxes being sold that are genetically domesticated. This means that they act more like dogs then wild animals. In fact, they love people! Due to a Russian experiment that's been going since 1956, a new species of genetically tame foxes know as the Silver Fox is now available to purchase! Foxes are cute, friendly, and good with kids. However, it's not all sunshine and daisies when it comes to fox ownership. Despite they're docile nature, any fox is still treated as a wild animal, and the states still see them as exotic pets. This means that most of the potential fox owners may not be able to actually buy one, depending on how strict their state's laws are on the subject. Unfortunately, most of the states have ridiculous, out-dated, and overbearing laws on exotic pet ownership, and many simply outright ban it. For example, in Pennsylvania if you want to own an exotic animals you are required to get permission from the local counsel, and show that you have the adequate facilities for the animal, which is fair enough. However they also require you to have at least two years of hands-on experience with the animal in question. This is an extreme problem, because as the law classifies, these animals are exotic, and quite rare. Hardly anyone in the are owns them privately, and the zoos will not let any volunteers interact directly with their animals. Essentially, this makes it an almost impossible task to acquire this license! These lazy laws allow for PA officials to not have to address the issue, because the requirements to get the actual license are so ridiculous. What it encourages more then anything is for people to go behind the backs of the law, and just acquire the desired animal illegally, which is bad for everyone. At the end of the day, all I want (as well as many others) is a pet fox. It will be tame, and no more harmful then any average dog.
