Gameplay

Once you decide what army you want to play with you need to know the basics for actually playing Warhammer 40k. Warhammer 40k is a turn based table top game. There are usually six turns in a game, unless stated otherwise. It is essential that you get the 40k rulebook. This cite provides an oversimplified explanation on how to play. A player is able to move, shoot and assault during their turn. The turn sequence is as follows:

  1. Opening phase
  2. Movement phase
  3. Shooting phase
  4. Assault Phase

Open Phase

The open phase is when the two players choose sides. There are many ways of choosing sides and many are dependent on game type that you are undertaking. For just a standard stand and shoot and see who has the most points at the end, a simple die role will suffice. Whoever roles the highest gets to either choose the starting side or choose the turn sequence. If you choose the side your opponent gets to set up before you. If you let the opponent to choose the side, you are able to set up first. For the exact rules on how to deploy your forces refer to the rulebook. It is usually better to set up last because you will be able to position your army in response to your opponents positioning. Note that if you set up second your first turn will be after your opponents. This means that they will be able to move their forces first.

Movement

Once you have deployed your forces, it is time to start the game. The game starts with a players movement phase. During this phase the player is able to move all of their forces. Note each unit type has a specified movement. For the standard infantry type the movement is 6 inches. This is when you are able to start your advance, take cover, or sit still and wait.

Shooting

This is the second part of your turn. During this phase you can shoot everything that is in range. Each weapon type has a specified range, for rapid fire weapons it is typically one shoot for 12 inches or two shoots at 6 inches. All weapons have a range and other rules that govern how they work. Shooting takes place in two phase. First, after you have checked the range, you role to hit. To find out what you need to role to hit you take the Ballistic Skill (BS). For the typical Imperial Guardsmen you need a 5 or better on role. After you have counted many hits you have you take the weapons strength and subtract the targets toughness. If the the weapon strength doubles the targets tough, the wound causes instant death. Count the many of wounds you inflict and then the opponent gets to make his saving throws. Count the many of saves he has and the ones he fails result in casualties.

Assault

During this phase you can charge and lock an opponents squad in close combat. Just like every thing please refer to the rulebook for the specifics. If you are locked in combat each player gets a chance to attack. If you have a higher initiative then your opponent you are able to attack first. Once you have rolled your dice and if any of your opponents guys are still standing they have the opportunity to retaliate.

Conclusion

After six turns the game is over. There are many ways to win depending on the game type. This could mean that you captured more objectives or that you have the most points at the end. Home
